In designing Bruce Levingston’s Night trilogy, three different portraits of Bruce were commissioned from the talented photographer Tony Notarberardino. All were taken in the same location (the roof of the fabled Chelsea Hotel) at twilight; yet each displays a different mood through the use of light and color. The tone of each cover reflects Bruce’s conceptual approach to the curation of that album. Heart Shadow presents a shadowy mysterious figure evocative of the characters that form the literary basis of the compositions on the album. Nightbreak features the luminous intensity of sunset and the dramatic shift in mood that happens as day turns to night, reflecting the shift between the light and dark of the human soul that Bruce explores within the music. Still Sound features a calmer, softer palette for the quieter pieces that make up the third and final album.
